Slava’s Thoughts
Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary rocketed (pun intended) straight to one of my favorite books. Spenser suggested it for the podcast, and I’m glad he did; I’d started The Martian earlier but never finished it.
What makes this one stand out is the rock-solid hard science fiction: every problem feels real, every solution clever and grounded in actual physics, engineering, and astrophysics. Weir turns complex concepts into propulsive (also intended), page-turning puzzles.
Then there’s the friendship at the heart of it—unexpected, heartfelt, and perfectly earned. The humor in the narration keeps it light even when the stakes are cosmic. Tight, smart, and massively entertaining. Project Hail Mary is hard sci-fi done right.
