Author Bio
William Lawrence Wight III (born August 11, 1989) is an American fantasy author. He independently published the Cradle series, which has topped the Amazon Kindle Store's bestseller list multiple times and appeared on The New York Times' Best Seller list. He also wrote the Traveler's Gate trilogy and the Elder Empire series.
Wight was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He earned a B.A. in 2011 and an M.F.A. in 2013 in Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida. He is the eldest of three siblings.
Wight began self-publishing in 2013 with the Traveler's Gate series, starting with House of Blades, which he wrote while completing his master's degree. He has credited his coursework with helping him develop the structure he uses in his writing. House of Blades was successful enough for him to become a full-time independent author soon after its release. He later founded Hidden Gnome Publishing to manage publishing, merchandising, and related work. In 2022, he used Kickstarter to fund the release of physical books.
He won the Stabby Award for Best Self-Published/Independent Novel of 2013 on Reddit's r/Fantasy for House of Blades. He won again in 2018 for Ghostwater and in 2019 for Underlord. After three wins, Wight retired from eligibility in 2020. The audiobooks for Bloodline, Reaper, Dreadgod, and Waybound, narrated by Travis Baldree, appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list in the months following their release. The audiobook of Waybound, the final volume of Cradle, was the top seller on Audible the week of its release.
