Slava’s Thoughts

I got into John Grisham through The Firm and then A Time to Kill, and that set the hook. What I like about Grisham is that his stories are built around systems and power structures. He drops regular people into them and lets the pressure do the work.

His books aren’t necessarily about clever twists. They’re about watching someone get slowly trapped by institutions that don’t care about them. The law isn’t treated as something noble by default. It’s a machine.

Grisham is good at pacing without turning everything into an action movie. Most of the tension comes from how boxed in the characters are and from seeing how much they’re willing to risk to get out or do the right thing.
